Lawyers’ strike delays bail

HYDERABAD: A strike by lawyers in the Nampally courts complex here affected the verdict which was to be delivered on Monday on the bail application by former Satyam Computers chairman B. Ramalinga Raju, his brother Rama Raju and former Chief Financial Officer of the company, Srinivas Vadlamani, and the plea by the police to take them into custody for further questioning.

The Sixth Additional Metropolitan Magistrate, D. Ramakrishna, adjourned the hearing in both the cases and another application by Stock Exchanges Board of India (SEBI) to record the statement of Mr. Ramalinga Raju in jail to January 16.

Dharna staged

The slogan-shouting lawyers boycotted courts and staged a dharna under the portico at the entrance to the complex demanding the suspension of the Inspector of Nampally police station who allegedly misbehaved with one of their colleagues G. Kiran Kumar. Led by T. Ranga Rao, president, Metropolitan Criminal Courts Bar Association, some of them also entered the court hall where the cases of Mr. Ramalinga Raju were being taken up.

Mr. Ranga Rao asked the counsels for the Raju brothers to leave, upon which the judge posted the cases for hearing after holidays on January 16. However, the strike was called off shortly afterwards when the Deputy Commissioner of Police of Central Zone P. Hari Kumar arrived on the scene and tendered apology to the lawyers. He promised to initiate action against the Inspector V. Umender. The judge dealing with the cases of Mr. Ramalinga Raju resumed the proceedings in his court when the withdrawal of the strike was informed to him but he did not reopen the petitions related to the Rajus as he had already given them a date.
