Corrections and clarifications

It is phosphorus, white or red. The heading of the accompanying box item, in a report “Israel shows signs of an end” (“International” page, January 12, 2009), was “Israel used white phosphorous explosives”. (The error was repeated in two instances in the text.)

The first paragraph of a report “Some jobs cannot be outsourced: Obama” (“International” page, January 11, 2009) was “Asserting that certain manufacturing jobs cannot be outsourced, U.S. President-elect Barack Obama on Saturday said his proposed $800 million recovery plan would create millions of jobs in the country.” It should have been “$800 billion”.

Reports in The Hindu, from the Hyderabad Bureau mentioned it as PricewaterhouseCoopers while Delhi reports gave it as Price Waterhouse. The Delhi Bureau is right. The auditors of Satyam are Price Waterhouse, a wholly owned arm of PricewaterhouseCoopers, a global auditing firm.

>The last paragraph of a report “Turn financial crisis into an opportunity, says Yechury” (January 11, 2009) said the lecture was organised by the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Memorial Trust in collaboration with the National Museum to mark the 43rd death anniversary of the country’s second Prime Minister, who passed away this day in 1966 in Tashkent. Gulzari Lal Nanda was the second Prime Minister, though he was only an interim Prime Minister between May 27 to June 9, 1964. (Lal Bahadur Shastri was next from June 9, 1964 – January 11, 1966.)

The seventh paragraph of a report “There will be no repeat of 2004 after Lok Sabha polls: Karat” (January 10, 2009) was “Mr. Karat criticised the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) for refusing to withdraw its Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed after Parliament passed a resolution expressing strong disapproval of the Israeli aggression on the Palestine people.” It was an editing error. The sentence should have been “... after the IUML passed a resolution ....”

An item “Promoted MD of Toyota Kirloskar” (“Snippets – Business/Markets” page, January 10, 2009) said Toyota Kirloskar Motor has promoted Shekar Viswanathan from the position of whole-time director to Deputy Managing Director (Commercial) with effect from January 8. The heading should have been “Promoted Dy. MD …”.

A sentence in the penultimate paragraph of a report “All set for an absorbing Ranji final” (“Sport”, January 12, 2009) said Mumbai was going into the 75th championship final with 37 triumphs and two runner-up spots. Mumbai finished runners-up four times — in 1947-48 to Holkar, in 1979-80 to Delhi, in 1982-83 to Karnataka and in 1990-91 to Haryana.

Corrections and Clarifications

It was wrongly stated in Corrections and Clarifications (January 13, 2009) that Price Waterhouse, the auditing firm for Satyam, "is a wholly-owned arm of PricewaterhouseCoopers, a global auditing firm." PWC is a network of firms, each of which is a separate and independent legal entity with its own ownership structure. In India, PricewaterhouseCoopers Private Ltd is engaged in providing tax, counselling and other advisory services. It cannot perform statutory audits. For Satyam this is done by Price Waterhouse, Bangalore, a partnership firm.
