Clarion call to de-criminalise women in prostitution

NEW DELHI: Underlining the need for criminalising buyers of prostituted sex and sex-profiteers and de-criminalising prostituted women and children, well-known feminist Catharine MacKinnon on Monday spoke about creating a special fund for capacity-building of victims.
Prof. MacKinnon stressed that the survivors of the heinous racket have a right to dignified livelihoods under the amended Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.
‘Women Worldwide’
She was speaking on “Choice, Censorship, Pornography and Prostitution” at a talk organised by the Outreach Programme at Jamia Millia Islamia here in collaboration with SAHMAT and a non-government organisation, “Apne Aap Women Worldwide”.
Interaction
Prof. MacKinnon also had a week-long interaction with victims and survivors of sex-trafficking organised by the NGO in West Bengal and Bihar.
Prof. MacKinnon is the Elizabeth A. Long Professor of Law at the University of Michigan Law School and Special Gender Adviser to the International Criminal Court.
