Mr. G. Satyamurty has given an excellent account of men who have moulded Coimbatore. I would like to add the following which have escaped Mr. Satyamurty’s attention. 1. P.S. Govindaswamy Naidu (PSG) may well be called the pioneer in engineering industries and education. Many of the industrialists who nurtured the engineering industry in Coimbatore had begun their life with PSG and later started their own industries. 2. Late T.A. Ramalingam Chettiyar was the first and the only Tamilian to become chairman of Tirupathi Tirumala Devasthanam Board. It was during his tenure that the first ghat road to Tirumala was laid overcoming many objections from the local people. 3. Late C.S. Rathnasabapathi Mudaliar was responsible for eradication of plague in Coimbatore by relocating the Kumaran Market area, for bringing in Siruvani water to Coimbatore and for the layout by the Municipality of the posh R.S. Puram and Ramnagar areas. Mr. Mudaliar was also the first South Indian to become the president of the Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, New Delhi. C.L. Sundar Rajan, R.S. Puram Raw dealYears ago when theatre owners, film producers and distributors requested the government to tackle video piracy the government protected the interests of the service providers. Of late, in Chennai and Coimbatore filmgoers get a raw deal. Tickets which used to be sold at Rs. 25 or Rs. 35 are now sold at about Rs. 100. Airconditioning in theatres seldom works and toilets there are unclean. Canteen contractors sell snacks at high rates. It is the filmgoers who sustain theatre owners, distributors and film producers. It is time the government protected the common man by constituting a committee to supervise the functioning of the theatres. C.M. Jeyaraam, Secretary, Citizens Voice Club, Coimbatore. Actor’s fansThis refers to the letter of Mr. J.V.V. Murthy (Dec. 1) on the visit of cine actor Sarath Kumar to Coimbatore. I totally agree with what Mr. Murthy has narrated. I too faced a similar problem on that day. Will Sarath Kumar look into this and advise his people to be honest? Ananthkumar, Ganapathy Ban bandhsNot a day passes without bandhs, strikes, road ‘roko’ agitations etc. While the Opposition parties resort to agitations at the drop of a hat, the ruling party gives them enough scope thanks to lapses in governance. Bandhs lead to loss of productivity, affect business and cause transport hassles. Can’t the agitators conduct processions and meetings peacefully to air their problems? It is time the government banned bandhs and strikes. M.R. Pillai, Coimbatore. Property taxWhen paying property tax and water tax, the receipt for the previous year/half-year is required to be produced by the customer. Why? The collecting office can refer to its records instead of troubling the customer. If necessary the customer can be requested to bring the previous receipt to facilitate work. S. Venkatachalam, Kavundampalayam. (Readers can mail to cbereaders@thehindu.co.in with address and phone number)
