‘India should spearhead prevention of global warming’

‘Nearly 40 per cent of the food produced is being used for production of cattle feed and poultry feed’


COIMBATORE: India should take the lead in mobilising world nations to launch measures to prevent the phenomenon called global warming, organic scientist G. Nammalvar told a press conference here recently.

He said the world faced two major threats, namely global warming and acute scarcity of food grains in many countries leading to food riots.

Temperature

Speaking on the harmful effects of global warming, he said the world’s temperature had increased considerably and environmentalists feared this would shoot up.

The huge volume of carbon dioxide discharged by vehicles and the increased use of urea which let out nitrogen gas also contributed to global warming.

The continued warming of the earth would result in the melting of ice caps in the polar region and the glaciers on the Himalayan range causing the sea water level to rise.

Also, cities, towns and villages in the coastal areas would get submerged by sea water.

Touching upon the food front, he claimed that 40 countries across the world had been witnessing acute scarcity of food grains. “Nearly 40 per cent of the food produced is being used for production of cattle feed and poultry feed.

The use of food grains for production of bio-diesel also contributes to acute food shortage,” Mr. Nammalvar said.

He condemned the creation of special economic zones and conversion of agricultural land into housing plots by real estate agents. These contributed to the shrinkage of cultivable lands. “If India produced its own food grains, there will not be any need to import food grains from other countries,” he asserted.

Mr. Nammalvar urged the Government to pay more attention to the increased production of millets which had high nutritional value.

He deplored that no research activity worth the name had been carried out to boost the production of millets.

He also warned against cultivation of genetically engineered food crops.
