KEEN BATTLE: Students take part in an IT quiz organised by the IT@Schools Project and Technopark, in the city on Thursday.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An Information Technology quiz that had contestants from across the State vying for the numero uno spot marked the final day of the two-day IT-Fest organised by the IT@School project and Technopark on Thursday.

The event tested the participants’ grasp of the field through a series of pulsating and thought provoking rounds such as ‘general IT,’ ‘who is who,’ ‘domain name,’ ‘expansion,’ ‘true or false’ and ‘logo identification.’ The final was preceded by a written preliminary round which short listed five students.

And for many, including the audience who attended the event, it was an opportunity to update their technological database. There were looks of amazement when the quiz master revealed that Adobe, an American computer software company headquartered in San Jose, California, got its name from a creek behind the house of John Warnock, one of its founders. The ‘domain name’ round also saw both the contestants and audience taxing their brains at guessing the expansion of the domain name ‘.bd’; in the end it was left to the quiz master to declare Bangladesh as the correct answer.

While Sreelakshmi Radhakrishnan of Presentation Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode, came first, the second and third positions went to Vivek U. Unni of C.G.M. English Medium High School Ongallur, Ottappalam, and Fazimsha H. of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Thevara.

Kozhikode and Tirur educational districts emerged joint winners in the seventh school IT festival. The second spot was shared by Kattappana and Vadakara educational districts. The trophy for the school which bagged the maximum number of points went to Presentation Higher Secondary School, Chevayur, Kozhikode.

Apart from quiz, the IT fest also saw competitions in digital painting, web designing and power point presentation. The festival introduced Malayalam typing as a competitive event from this year. Nearly 250 students studying in class VIII, IX and X took part in the two-day event.

Yet another highlight of the event was a series of seminars on Information Communication Technology by experts from the respective fields. Starting with T. Pradeep, winner of Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award and professor at the Department of Chemistry and Sophisticated Analytical Instrument Facility, IIT Chennai, who kept the audience riveted with his talk on ‘The infinite problem of infinitesimal,’ the sessions were enlightening. Some of the other topics touched upon were ‘Inner life of digital pictures’ by Achuth Shankar S. Nair, Head of the Department of Bioinformatics and Cyber Safety, ‘Trends in New Media,’ by Satish Babu, president, InApp Information Technologies and a session on ‘Cyber Safety’ by V.K. Bhadran, Additional Director, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing. Varkala Radhakrishnan, Member of Parliament, gave away prizes to the winners at the valedictory ceremony.

Minister for Education M.A. Baby attended the sessions.

The function was also attended by Siddharth Bhattacharya, Chief Executive Officer, Technopark and Anwar Sadath, Executive Director, IT@School Project.
