‘Mumbai terror attack has had an effect on tourism’

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: The terror attack in Mumbai has had its effect on the tourism sector in the State.

Speaking after inaugurating the Travel and Tourism Fair here on Friday, Karnataka Tourism Director K. Vishwanatha Reddy said that the effect was temporary, and tourism in the State would be back on track soon.

“In fact, recession has not affected tourism, but the Mumbai incident has, which in my opinion is a temporary,” he added. To boost the arrival of foreign tourists, Mr. Reddy said: “We are concentrating on medical tourism aimed at foreigners, especially from the U.S. and Europe. The cost of treatment is far less in India than in the West.” The department has received several enquiries after the medical facilities available in Bangalore were showcased recently, he added.

Mr. Reddy said that the Government would invite expression of interest (EoI) from entrepreneurs for heli-tourism. The heli-tourism, he said, would be operated in Malnad circuit, heritage circuit and coastal circuit.“With the hotel and air tariff dropping substantially, it is the best time to undertake domestic travel. We are expecting around 10,000 visitors to the three-day fair,” said Sanjiv Agarwal, chairman and managing director of Fairfest Media that is organising the fair at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium.
