State-level science quiz in Dharwad

Staff Correspondent

Event is on Tuesday at Karnatak College

66 high school teams to participate

First three winners to get cash prizes

DHARWAD: Sixty-six teams from rural and urban areas will participate in a State-level science quiz competition for high school students here on Tuesday.

V.A. Maachakanur, Additional Commissioner of Public Instruction, Dharwad, told presspersons here on Saturday that the Department of Science and Technology, the Karnataka Rajya Vijnana Parishat and the Department of Educational Research and Training were jointly organising the quiz.

Mr. Maachakanur said the former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation U.R. Rao would inaugurate the competition, which would be held at the Srujana auditorium at Karnatak College.

Convener of the parishat V.A. Sankanur said taluk-level and district-level quiz competitions had already been held, and teams that had qualified for the State-level competition would be participating in the event.

He said separate competitions would be held for students from rural and urban schools. In both the categories, the first three prize-winners would get cash awards of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 5,000 respectively.

Prof. Sankanur said science quiz programmes held earlier had helped create awareness on science and prompted many students to undertake scientific research. Mobile science exhibitions had also proved effective in this regard, he added.

To a question, Mr. Sankanur said steps were being taken to conduct more than 120 scientific experiments in schools

and colleges in rural areas, which were lacking in laboratory infrastructure.
