GREAT OCCASION: Villagers participating in the ‘Samudhaya Pongal’ near Karur. KARUR: Pongal is the festival that involves the society as much as it focuses on the individual. In several areas, Pongal was celebrated as a community festival in the days of yore. That spirit of unity and amity came alive when the Tamilnadu News Print and Papers Limited (TNPL) organised the “Samudhaya Pongal” in eight panchayats. As part of Corporate Social Responsibility, the TNPL has been actively involved in promoting the culture of the region. On the occasion of Pongal, the TNPL took the opportunity to showcase its Corporate Social Responsibility by organising the “Samudhaya Pongal” in select villages, in three town panchayats and five village panchayats around Kagidhapuram in Karur district. This was the second year in succession that the TNPL has organised it. The areas covered included Punjaipugalur, Punnam, Vettamangalam, Thirukadudurai, Nanjaipugalur and TNPL residential quarters. Over 300 women participated in the festivity organised in the respective panchayats where the local elected representatives also participated. The areas wore a festive look and enthusiasm pervaded the whole area. Those who participated in the festivities included Thirukadudurai Panchayat president K. Subbulakshmi, Pujai Thottakurichi Town Panchayat president Sakthivel, Nanjai Pugalur Panchayat president Mallika Kandasamy, Kombupalayam Panchayat president Mani, Punnam Panchayat president Devaraj, Punjai Pugalur Town Panchayat president Kalyani Saminathan and Kagithapuram Town Panchayat president Muthu. Along with them TNPL officials including Assistant General Manager (Human Resource Development) S. Ramamoorthy, Public Relations Officer Nawaz Basha, Community Development Officer Ragupathy participated in the event. The TNPL sponsored new pots for preparing pongal, commodities and firewood. The participants thanked the TNPL and lauded their gesture.
