Procurement price of ‘neera’ increased

CHENNAI: K. Ramachandran, Minister for Khadi and Village Industries, has said that the State government had decided to increase the procurement price of ‘Neera” (pathaneer) from Rs 3.50 per litre to Rs. 7 per litre with immediate effect.
Besides it had directed the Palmgur Cooperative Federations to procure palmgur from the manufacturers of palm products.
In a statement issued here on Friday, the Minister said that these measures were taken to provide additional income to the palmyrah tree workers.
At this stage, a section of the workers announced that they would launch toddy tapping programme on January 21 which, the Minister said, was not only illegal but also spoil the industry as well, the Minister said.
Mr. Ramachandran has appealed to the workers not to fall a prey to the campaign.
The Minister urged the workers to cooperate with the government in its endeavour to improve their earnings of the palmyrah tree workers, the release added.
