Awaiting attention: It is common to spot sewage flowing in the open in West Tambaram. — TAMBARAM: The Ministry of Urban Development has given its nod for the long-pending underground drainage project for Tambaram Municipality. Speaking to The Hindu after a meeting with officials of the Ministry held in New Delhi a couple of days ago, E. Mani, Tambaram Municipal Chairman, said the project would be executed at an estimated cost of Rs. 160. 97 crore and completed by the end of 2010. Of the project cost, the Ministry’s share would be 35 per cent as a grant through Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission and the State government’s share would be 15 per cent. Of the remaining 50 per cent of the project cost, they would be receiving a loan of Rs. 40 crore from a funding agency of the State government, while another Rs. 40 crore would be the contribution of Tambaram residents – beneficiaries of the project, Mr. Mani said. The State government agencies will complete the remaining formalities and paperwork and the tender was expected to be called for in three months. The project has been split into three packages and once work commenced, it would be completed in 15 months, the Muncipal Chairman said. As many as 16 pumping and lift stations and two main pumping stations, two sewage treatment plants – one on a 15-acre site in Kannadapalayam in West Tambaram and another on a 12-acre site near the Agaram Lake in East Tambaram would be built. Mr. Mani said there were plans to use the treated water for irrigation purposes in villages near East Tambaram, while it would be used for creating a green zone in West. Elaborating on the financial component of the residents, Mr. Mani said it would be in the form of collection of deposit from the more than 31,000 assessees and their share would be Rs. 40 crore. Already, the municipality had mobilised Rs. 8 crore over the past few years as deposit from residents. Now that there was some progress in the project, they would intensify their campaign to mobilise funds from residents, he said.
