Two Indian merchant navy officers get bail in South Korea

Kochi: The Supreme Court of South Korea has granted bail to Captain Jasprit Chawla and Chief Officer Shyam Chetan, who have been in custody for 13 months after being accused of causing oil spill from their tanker Hebei Spirit off a Korean port, according to a press release issued by the Merchant Navy Officers Welfare Association , India.

The court, however, has not permitted them to leave the country. The incident occurred in December 2007 when the tanker that was safely anchored 6.2 nautical miles off the Port of Daesan was rammed by a barge owned by Samsung Heavy Industries.
