Making farmers market savvy

Special Correspondent

CHICKBALLAPUR: The University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore, on Saturday launched “Agriculture marketing and agri-business management project”, under the aegis of the Centre-sponsored National Agriculture Development Programme, to improve the marketing knowledge of farmers.

The five-year project, which was formally inaugurated here by the university’s Research Director B.V. Patil, would be extended to all the districts in the State.

P.K. Mandanna, professor and head of the university’s Department of Agricultural Marketing, Cooperation and Business Management, said the State Government had entrusted the job of implementing the project in south Karnataka districts to the UAS, Bangalore. He said that in the changed economic scenario, farmers were unable to get good prices for their produce as they lacked adequate marketing and business management knowledge.

The university would create aware-ness among farmers about export promotion, market intelligence, market-led agriculture expansion and quality and value upgradation of agricultural products, Prof. Mandanna said.
