B.Ed. programme a major hit, says Regional Director MADURAI: Student enrolment in the Madurai region for various courses of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has increased by 14 per cent when compared to last year. While active enrolment in January 2008 was 7,697, it went up to 9,054 in January 2009 batch admissions undertaken in the last three months, according to M. Shanmugham, IGNOU Regional Director, Madurai Region. “The 14 per cent increase in admissions over the previous year shows the good response from people in the region for our university programmes. Particularly, the B.Ed. programme is a major hit for our university,” he told The Hindu on Saturday. According to him, some important initiatives were taken by the university administration to reach out to more students by launching new courses. The number of schools (departments) in the IGNOU had increased from 11 to 22. As a result, new courses in the distance education mode were being offered, which had attracted more students. Admissions for the B.Ed. programme alone stood at 3,200 in the Madurai region, Dr. Shanmugham said. Management programmes, computer courses and courses in Cyber Law and Intellectual Property Rights that were being offered online were in demand. Seventeen districts in the State were under the Madurai Region, which had 83 Learner Support Centres for students. Besides, the university had also introduced a concept called ‘convergence’ by which regular colleges offered its programmes. There were 22 convergence institutions in the Madurai region.
