KOCHI: Kerala star V.A. Jagadeesh (82) and V. Suresh (71) helped State Bank of Travancore, Thiruvananthapuram, defeat Maruthi Homes TCC by 57 runs in a Pool ‘A’ match of the BPCL Kochi Refinery all-India cricket tournament at the Kochi Refinery Oval, Ambalamugal, on Saturday. The tournament’s main phase, a league-cum-knockout affair began today, and Aluva’s Globstar Telecom defeated host BPCL Kochi Refinery by six wickets in Pool ‘B’. The scores: SBT 213 for five in 30 overs (V. A. Jagadeesh 82, V. Suresh 71) bt Maruthi Homes TCC, Tripunithura 156 for nine in 30 overs (Sindo 61 n.o., Jayadas 34). BPCL Kochi Refinery 175 for eight in 30 overs (P. M. Jinesh 71, K. J. Rakesh 56, V.S. Shiju three for 55) lost to Globstar Telecom, Aluva 176 for four in 28 overs (P.V. Manikandan 63, Sachin Mohan 38 n.o.). Better field for Lotus trophyThe Lotus Trophy all-India tennis tournament, which begins at the Lotus Club and the Regional Sports Centre courts here on Wednesday, has a bigger and better cast this time. Tamil Nadu’s Vinod Sridhar, the India men’s No. 19, and Karnataka’s Asha Nandakumar, ranked No. 18 among women, head the list of prominent names for the event, which will be played on synthetic courts. Many of the main matches will be played under lights. “We have hiked the prize-money to Rs. 2.5 lakh this year (from Rs. 1.5 lakh) and next year, we plan to make this a national-ranking tournament,” said Thomas Oommen, the Chairman of the Tournament Committee. The event had around 40 players last year but this time, the tournament has attracted 70 entries. There are four players in the country’s top 30 in both the men’s and women’s sections. Kerala star Rynold Timothy and IAF’s Hari Chidambaram have been given wild cards in men’s singles. The qualifying rounds begin on Monday. Semifinalists spottedDon Bosco, Vaduthalla defeated SOS, Thrissur 30-4 and entered the semifinals in the boys’ section of the all-Kerala kids’ basketball tournament at Mavelikkara. Lourde School, Kottayam, and YMCA, Alapuzha also made it to the semifinals. The results (quarterfinals): Boys: Don Bosco, Vaduthala ‘A’ 30 (Steve Luiz 16, Augustine Francison 12) bt SOS, Thrissur 4; Lourdes Public School, Kottayam 22 (Allen Francis 12) bt Infant Jesus, Kollam 4;YMCA, Alappuzha 12.
