HONOUR: D. Padma, president, Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha Trust (left), presenting a memento to Malathi Rangaswami, joint secretary of the Music Academy at a function in Chennai on Saturday. CHENNAI: The Sarvani Sangeetha Sabha Trust has rendered a yeoman service to promoting young artists, according to Malathi Rangaswami, joint secretary of The Music Academy. Dr. Rangaswami said many top artists had their debut at the sabha, which she said was a stepping stone for young talented artists. She was speaking at the inauguration of its 23rd anniversary celebrations here on Saturday. It was a great achievement that a group of women had established the sabha to do something for the cause of music. M.S. Prakash, General Manager (Public Relations), Indian Overseas Bank, who inaugurated the festival, praised the founders of the sabha for their untiring efforts at carrying on the festival for more than two decades. The sabha was established at the Andhra Bala Nanda Sangam School, T. Nagar, on the Thyagaraja Aradhana day 23 years ago. It organises two performances by young artists every month. The entry is free, and the sabha depends on donations. The inaugural function was followed by a vocal concert by Gayathri Venkataraghavan. The five-day festival will have concerts at 6.15 p.m. at the Music Academy’s mini-hall every day. Except on Monday when an instrumental ensemble will perform, vocal concerts will be held on other days. Trichur Brothers Krishna Mohan and Sriram Kumar Mohan will perform on Sunday, Vasundhara Rajagopal on Tuesday and S. Kasturirangan on Wednesday.
