R. Narasimhan passes away

R. Narasimhan

CHENNAI: R. Narasimhan, former General Manager, Southern Railway, passed away here on Saturday after a prolonged illness. He was 75 and is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.

Mr. Narasimhan was the first officer from the Indian Railway Accounts Service to become the General Manager of a railway zone.

Initiates MRTS

He occupied the post from April 1990 to November 1991.

He was instrumental in initiating the Mass Rapid Transit System in Chennai and the Chennai Egmore-Tiruchirapalli gauge conversion.

He was a pioneer of computerisation in Indian Railways.

Sports lover

As an ardent lover of sports, Narasimhan was active in strengthening Southern Railway teams in all disciplines.

He served as vice-president of the Swimming Federation of India and the Tami Nadu Aquatics Association. He was in the panel that organised the swimming competitions during the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi.

His daughter Rama Narasimhan, a former national swimming champion, is a sports officer in Southern Railway here.
