9 die as truck ploughs into three huts

KILLER VEHICLE: One of the huts which was destroyed at Kalavaikarai in Mannargudi on Saturday.

MANNARGUDI: Nine persons were killed and eight others injured when a truck carrying iron rods ploughed into three huts at Kalavaikarai in Mannargudi early on Saturday.

The vehicle was on its way from Tiruchi to Thiruthuraipoondi. Brake failure is suspected. The victims were asleep inside the huts.

The deceased were, Kanagavalli (38), Kanimozhi (14), Santhosh (12), Govindammal (58), Chitra (28), Akshaya (4), Malliga (36), Nadarajan (60) and Chinthamani (80).

The injured were, Sivasami (45), Parvathi (50), Sudhakaran (20), Abirami (18), Vivek (17), Vasantha (50), Jayabal (20) (lorry driver) and Maheshkumar (18) (cleaner).

U. Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, visited the spot.
