Another award will be given for the best budding cartoonist of the year Four-member jury set up to judge the entries BANGALORE: The Indian Institute of Cartoonists has invited entries for the Maya Kamath Memorial Awards for Excellence in Cartooning. Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Saturday, Managing Trustee of Indian Institute of Cartoonists V.G. Narendra said the awards would be given to three best political cartoons of 2008, besides another award for the best budding cartoonist of the year. The Maya Kamath Memorial competition is open to all English and regional language cartoonists. Participants can send a maximum of three published political cartoons appearing between January 1 and December 31, 2008. If the cartoon has been published in a regional language, the entry should include an English translation of the text. The participants should also mention the date and name of the publication in which the cartoon had appeared. While the first prize carries a cash reward of Rs. 25,000, the second and third prizes will fetch the winners Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 5,000, respectively. The Indian Institute of Cartoonists has also instituted the Maya Kamath Memorial Award for best budding cartoonist, aged 25 years and below as on January 1, 2009, with a view to encourage youngsters to take up cartooning. The participants for the best budding cartoonist competition can send their published or unpublished entries with cartoons and caricatures (maximum of six), along with the copies of the publications in which these have appeared, if any. The best budding cartoonist award 2008 carries a cash prize of Rs. 10,000. All entries should be sent to the institute at No. 1, Midford House, Midford Garden, off M.G. Participants sending their entries by e-mail can contact the institute for technical specifications. The institute has set up a four-member jury comprising noted playwright Girish Karnad, artist S.G. Vasudev, cartoonist Keshav and journalist H.S. Balram. The award ceremony will be organised in March in Bangalore, and an exhibition of the selected cartoons will also be held at the same time. The awards have been instituted in memory of Maya Kamath, whose works have appeared not only in various newspapers, but also been catalogued and archived by Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women.
