KOZHIKODE: Mani Ratnam called it one of the most realistic films made in Tamil. Subramaniapuram, which marked the debut of writer-director-actor M. Sasikumar, was well received not just by the critics, but the masses as well. The film, in fact, was one of the biggest success stories of Tamil cinema last year. On Saturday, the city played host to the release of the Malayalam translation of the screenplay of Subramaniapuram. The book, published by Olive Publications, Kozhikode, was released by writer Punathil Kunhabdulla, who presented a copy to director Blessy. Among those who spoke at the function were director M. Mohanan; writer V.R. Sudheesh; Tamil actor and director Samudrakani; Tamil theatre activist Pralayan; and Premchand, journalist. It was presided over by M.K. Muneer, chairman, Olive Publications. The book, written by B. Shibu, was introduced by K.J. Ajayakumar. In his presidential address, Dr. Muneer said Subramaniapuram was the 16th in the series of screenplays brought out by Olive. “We began the series with the publication of Kazhcha by Blessy in 2004,” he said. “It is not very often that screenplays from other Indian languages are brought out in Malayalam. But Subramaniapuram is a very different film, as we have all seen, so a Malayalam version of its screenplay is relevant.”
