An ethnic Tamil being brought to a hospital in Vavuniya on Friday. COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Army Chief Sarath Fonsenka has said the last defences of the LTTE in the Mullathivu district are crumbling faster than expected and claimed that the outcome of the war would be evident soon. Speaking at his official residence at a dinner hosted for the media on Saturday night, Lt. Gen. Fonsenka said in the last 17 days, since the fall of Kilinochchi, the troops have marched 17 km inside Mullathivu. He said the LTTE, which had been in control Kilinochchi and Mullathivu districts for the past one decade, was “now boxed into a small jungle area in the Mullathivu district”. To a question on the whereabouts of the top brass of the LTTE, the General said, “We have no specific information. The only escape route available to them is via the sea towards South East Asia.” Separately, the military said soldiers had captured a highly-fortified LTTE camp and a boat manufacturing factory in Maruthampuvel. .In a report posted on its website, the LTTE alleged that four members of an internally displaced family in Visuvamadu in Kilinochchi were killed in shelling by the military. Corrections and Clarifications
The name of the Sri Lankan Army Chief is Sarath Fonseka and not Fonsenka as
mentioned in a report (heading and text) "LTTE confined to a small jungle:
Fonsenka" ("International" page, January 19, 2009). Lt. Gen. G.S.C. Fonseka
was appointed Commander of the Army in Sri Lanka on December 6, 2005.
