MORALE BOOSTING: At many outlets, the pump boys worked an extra shift during the strike period.

CHENNAI: Oil marketing company Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) has announced a cash reward for the dispensing staff of its petrol bunks that functioned during the strike by officers of other national oil companies earlier this month.

The pump boys, as the dispensing staff are popularly known, would get Rs.1,000 each, sources in the company said. Both the company and the petroleum dealer concerned would contribute Rs.500 each towards the reward. In the event of the bunk being company-owned-company-operated, HPCL would bear the entire amount.

Sources in the company said at many of the outlets the pump boys had to put in another shift with motorists making a beeline to the bunks when the strike entered the second day.

Apart from enhancing the company’s image, the efforts of the dispensing staff resulted in enhanced sales. The sales volume of HPCL on the second day of the strike alone was 1.5 times the usual sale.

“They were able to meet the additional demand and managed the traffic in and around outlets very well,” said R.Radhakrishnan, General Manager (South Zone) of HPCL. He added that the reward is in tune with company’s policy towards the pump attendants. It was the first to recognise their contributions by coming up with ‘spot and reward’ scheme for those who excel forecourt service at the outlets. An official of the company said almost all the HPCL outlets across the country, including 266 in the Chennai region, which covers seven districts, functioned during the strike. On an average, 10-12 pump boys are employed by each of the outlet.

Distribution of the reward, for the pump boys, has begun and is expected to be completed in three days.
