Probe extended to cover Maytas

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Central government on Monday directed the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to extend the scope of its ongoing probe into the affairs of Satyam Computer Services to Maytas Properties and Maytas Infrastructure also. This is in view of the apparent “nexus” between the scam-tainted IT major and its two group entities promoted by family members of Satyam’s erstwhile chairman, B. Ramalinga Raju.

Briefing journalists here on the Satyam accounting fraud, Corporate Affairs Minister Prem Chand Gupta said: “Inspectors investigating the matter in Satyam have informed that there seems to be a nexus between the events that have taken place in Satyam and Maytas Properties and Maytas Infrastructure.”

“[Accordingly], the government has approved and authorised the SFIO inspectors to obtain such books, records, papers as they deem necessary from Maytas Properties and Maytas Infra,” he said.

The Minister, however, was non-committal on whether the boards of the two Maytas firms would be superseded.
