Babu and Praveen star in Garnet’s win

CHENNAI: G. Babu (118) and D. Praveen Kumar (five for 54) helped Garnet defeat Kattankulathur by 50 runs in a recent Kancheepuram DCA first division league cricket match.

Fine Star’s Syed Iqbal Ahmed destroyed Flakt India, returning figures of five for 20 to set up a 10-wicket win in another match.

The scores: First Div.: Garnet 244 in 42.3 overs (G. Babu 118, Senthil four for 80, Jaiesh five for 44) bt Kattankulathur 194 for nine in 45 overs (Shankar 63, D. Praveen Kumar five for 54).

Gurunanak Combines 211 in 45 overs (Prabhu 92) lost to Brindavan 212 for five in 41.4 overs (S. Sarathkumar 61, T.K. Janakiraman 53 n.o.).

Flakt India 66 in 22 overs (Syed Iqbal Ahmed five for 20) lost to Fine Star 67 for no loss in 8.5 overs.

Aditya, Mitchell shine

Aditya Arun scored an unbeaten half-century to guide Vidya Mandir (Mylapore) into the semifinals of the Sacred Heart city schools under-14 cricket tournament with a three-wicket win over Jawahar Vidyalaya.

In the final four, Vidya Mandir will meet Don Bosco, which progressed thanks to Mitchell’s all-round performance (four for 20 and 31 not out) against St. Michael’s Academy.

The scores: Jawahar Vidyalaya 135 for eight in 30 overs (Guru Vignesh 42, Divya Prakash 27, K.S. Prahalad three for 21) lost to Vidya Mandir 136 for seven in 27.4 overs (Aditya Arun 70 n.o., K. Divya Prakash three for 19).

St. Michael’s Academy 74 in 29.4 overs (Mitchell four for 20) lost to Don Bosco 75 for one in 14 overs (Mitchell 31 n.o.).

Vinay sizzles

Vinay’s all-round display (three wickets and an unbeaten 30) helped AVM CCF defeat JS Rao CA by four wickets in a Little Hearts league under-14 cricket match, here on Sunday.

The scores: Little Hearts CA 85 for nine in 30 overs (B. Vasanth 31 n.o., V. Aditya three for 10) lost to Kedar’s CA 89 for five in 27.5 overs; JS Rao CA 133 in 29.2 overs (Praveen Kumar 31, Vinay three for 15) lost to AVM CCF 135 for six in 27.2 overs (Vinay 30 n.o.).

Srinath scalps six

Leg-spinner K. Srinath bagged six wickets, as PACE Academy registered a comprehensive win in the under-14 Velammal cricket tournament on Monday.

The scores: PACE Academy 164 for three in 30 overs (M.S. Washington Sundar 76, S. Ravikumar 25 n.o.) bt Velammal Matriculation School 53 in 21.5 overs (K. Srinath six for 31).

St. Mary’s posts win

St. Mary’s Anglo Indian HSS defeated SIGA by 37 runs in the Platinum Jubilee inter-Salesian schools cricket tournament on Monday.

The scores: St. Mary’s Anglo Indian HSS 113 in 23.1 overs (Antony Xavier four for 20) bt SIGA 76 in 15.2 overs.

Harpreet beats Vidya

Harpreet Singh defeated Vidya Pillai 60-11, 78-39, 54-39 on Monday in the TNSC invitation snooker tournament being held here.

Alagappan elected TNTA president

M.A. Alagappan has been unanimously elected as president of the Tamil Nadu Tennis Association at the council meeting held on Saturday.

St. Joseph’s meet

The seventh annual St. Joseph’s College inter-school and college staff tournaments will be held on February 7 and 8 at the college campus.

The events include ball badminton, basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and football for men, and badminton, table tennis, carrom and throwball for women. There will be no entry fee for the participants.

Football tournament

The 10th edition of the Rev. Fr. L.D. Murphy SJ Memorial inter-collegiate football tournament will be held at Loyola College here from January 20 to 27. As many as 21 teams will participate in the tournament, to be conducted in four stages. The winner and runner-up will take home Rs. 5000 and Rs. 3000.

Inter-varsity meet

SRM University is organising the all-India inter universities invitation tournaments in volleyball, basketball, ball badminton and chess (men and women) from January 20 to 22 at SRM University campus, Kattankulathur. More than 25 universities are expected to take part.

Kamal adjudged best

R. Kamal of FCI and R. Kavitha of Vellore were adjudged ‘outstanding lifter’ in their respective sections in the senior Tamil Nadu weightlifting championship organised by the Tamil Nadu Weightlifting Association in Madurai recently.

Kamal, who won in the 62 kg category, had a body weight of 62 kg and a total lift of 259 kg while Kavitha, who topped in the 69 kg had a total lift of 218 kg with a body weight of 68.5 kg.

Vijay Pai and Siddanth Pai (59 nett) won the Paterson Bowl golf event, organised at the Madras Gymkhana Club golf annexe recently. P. Mukherjee and Krishnan (60 nett) finished runner-up.

AITA Super Series

SR Sports School (Nanganallur) will host the AITA Super Series tennis tournament for under-14 boys and girls (singles and doubles) from January 26 to 30. The qualifying rounds begin on January 24.
