MADURAI: Youth committees, with 10 members each, would be formed by Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) in every village in the district to work for maintaining peace and render help during times of communal disturbances, said K. Jawahar, District Youth Coordinator, NYK. The committee would be involved in creating awareness among villagers of social issues, engaging rural youth in various social, economic and community activities through their own organisations and also to help promote rural sports with adequate infrastructure. He was delivering the presidential address at a district-level youth conference on the theme ‘Youth against terrorism and violence’ at the Gandhi Museum here on Monday. The conference was organised by Madurai branch of NYK, which is part of a nationwide youth campaign, “Together for Peace,” conducted across the nation during the birth week of Swami Vivekananda. A signature campaign was also conducted in which the participants and public signed slogans against terrorism in a banner. S. Kumaravel, Assistant Commissioner of Police, in his inaugural address, spoke on the measures that the police department took to curb violence and maintain vigil and said that formation of youth committees would be helpful to the police. M. Mariappan, vice-president, Gandhi Museum, delivered the valedictory address.
