Special Correspondent

High Court wants report to be submitted on February 5

CHENNAI: Stating that it would like to have an independent opinion on the alleged assault on a 55-year-old woman prisoner in the Special Prison for Women, Vellore, the Madras High Court has directed the District Judge (DJ), Vellore, to visit the jail along with the Dean, CMC Hospital, Vellore, and submit a report on February 5.

In his petition, P.Pugalenthi, an advocate, had submitted that during his visit to the special prison on January 5 to meet his client, S.Nalini, a convict in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, she had informed him that Saradha was assaulted by three convict warders and a prisoner. Nalini had also told the petitioner that the woman was also humiliated.

Earlier, a Division Bench, comprising Justices Elipe Dharma Rao and R.Subbiah, had directed the Dean, CMC Hospital, to examine Saradha and file a report.

When the matter came up, the Medical Superintendent of the hospital submitted a report.

The Bench said it went through the counter filed by the prison Superintendent. The court said it would like to have an independent opinion and gave the directive to the DJ, Vellore.
