Government pension to two Olympians

New Delhi: The Union Government on Thursday sanctioned a monthly pension of Rs. 8,000 each to Olympians Niranjan Das and Gora Chand Seal with immediate effect under the National Welfare Scheme for sportspersons.

The 86-year-old Bengal swimmer Seal, who competed in the 1948 London Olympics, will get the pension for life. Seal was already drawing a sum of Rs. 2,000 per month, according to sport ministry sources.

Das, also from Bengal, participated in the wrestling event of the 1956 Helsinki Olympics. He will get the pension for five years, the sources said. — PTI
