Experts push for pneumonia vaccination

Bangalore: A panel of paediatricians, child health experts and researchers, who have come together to create awareness about childhood pneumonia, have suggested that young children should be compulsorily administered Hib and pneumococcal vaccines to keep them away from the disease.

Mathuram Santosham, Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said told presspersons here on Thursday that a group of leading child health experts had recommended to the Centre to introduce Hib into the universal immunisation programme this year.HIB costs between Rs. 350 and Rs. 500 a dose depending on the brand. The pneumococcal vaccine is priced anywhere between Rs. 3,200 and Rs. 3,500 per dose. Infants younger than six months need three plus one dose.
