CHENNAI: Labour organisations are demanding appropriate State intervention to preserve their rights by revoking some of the orders of the State government, which are detrimental to labour welfare, said AITUC Tamil Nadu general secretary T.R.S. Mani. Speaking at a seminar on ‘Are welfare boards being sidetracked?’ here on Tuesday, he said, “many rights are being denied to labour organisations by invoking the new G.O.122. The government should take measures to make the schemes for labour welfare more effective in addressing the legitimate needs of labour.” The positive role of labour organisations in enrolment should be sustained in order to make the organisations more vibrant, he added. The delay in providing the benefits of the labour welfare schemes to affected individuals of the labour organisations will increase with the new procedures of red tape associated with the new order, said N. Periyasami, former Member of Legislative Assembly. “The bureaucracy should not be a hindrance to the welfare of labour and should be a stepping stone to welfare of crore of labourers in the country,” he added. “The labour unions have decided to organise demonstrations across the State on February 10,” said K. Ravi, general secretary of the AITUC Construction Workers’ Union of Tamil Nadu. Without proper State intervention to solve the problem, labour mobilisation in the State will have to be carried out to have a solution, said a resolution passed at the seminar. The resolution of the meeting demanded a new order of the government to set right the anomaly.
