NEW DELHI: Raising the issue of offering flats to outsiders when Delhi is reeling under an acute shortage of dwellings for its own population, the Capital’s residents’ welfare associations under the banner of United RWAs Joint Action (URJA) have demanded that non-Delhi residents be weeded out of the DDA’s draw mechanism for housing in the city. URJA senate member from East Delhi Varinder Arora said that many Delhi residents lost out to people who have no real residency here but have secured flats for speculation or re-sale purposes. “It is natural that a vast number of Delhiites were unsuccessful when so many non-Delhiites participated in the draw.” NGO People’s Action president Sanjay Kaul said Delhi needs about 15 lakh new dwelling units to accommodate its swelling population. “The DDA’s mandate is not to offer accommodation to people from other States but to look after the interests of Delhiites,” he added. “By hyping this housing scheme, DDA took lakhs of innocent Delhiites for a ride and earned interest worth crores of rupees. Apart for cancellation of the rigged draw, the DDA and banks should also return the interest of 8 per cent to all applicants,” said an unsuccessful applicant Madan Gopal Minotra.
