TIRUCHI: All efforts would be made to ensure complete coverage during the second phase of the pulse polio immunisation campaign scheduled for February 1, Collector T. Soundiah has said. Speaking at a consultative meeting on Friday to discuss the arrangements, Mr. Soundiah said the government was keen to ensure the success of the programme. Polio vaccination was safe and the message was being spread among the masses in the wake of the rumours during the first phase.Under the first phase, about 2.55 lakh children were administered the drops and all the children were healthy. An estimated 2.63 lakh children below the age of five in the district would be administered the vaccine under the second phase. The vaccine would be administered through 1470 centres in the district, including 213 in Tiruchi City. About 91,000 children in urban areas and 1.72 lakh children in the rural areas would be covered. Mobile teams would administer the vaccines to the children at places of public congregation. The vaccine would be administered to omitted children on February 2 and 3. Special efforts would be made to vaccinate children of migrant families, Mr. Soundiah said. P. Ravishankar, Dean, K. A. P. Viswanatham Government Medical College, M. Poongothai, Joint Director, Medical and Rural Services, R. Mohan, Deputy Director (in-charge), Health Services, Sivanesan, City Health Officer, attended the meeting.
