MATTER OF PRIDE: V. Ananthakrishnan (left), Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi, hands over first copy of the book, “CNC Programming and Operations” to R. Senthil Kumar, Regional Director of Apprenticeship Training, Mumbai. TIRUCHI: Copies of a book titled ‘CNC Programming and Operations’, authored by three young artisans of BHEL, Tiruchi, will soon be made available in all libraries functioning under the Apprenticeship Training Board. The artisans, G. Sankar, T. Satish and R. Balamurugan, are ITI certificate holders who joined BHEL in 2005 after undergoing apprenticeship training. Since there was no regular curriculum in ITIs on CNC machines, the trio spent their spare time to author the 428 page-easy-to-use guide in Tamil on using CNC machines, based on their practical experience. The book dealing with lathe and milling activities under Fanuc system has been designed to be useful for apprentice trainees, CNC trainers and trainees, CNC programmers and operators, diploma and engineering students. Expressing pride over the unique achievement of the trio while handing over the first copy of the book to R. Senthil Kumar, Regional Director for Apprenticeship Training, Mumbai, at a function on Friday, the Executive Director of BHEL, Tiruchi, V. Ananthakrishnan, said the authoring of books by the artisans reflected the encouragement provided by the organisation to employees to make their innate creative and innovative strengths surface. He advocated continuous learning by employees in the interests of the organisation. In deference to Mr. Ananthakrishnan’s request, Mr. Senthilkumar assured that the books will be procured by all libraries under the Apprenticeship Training Board. Mr. Senthilkumar said on the occasion that the Central government has allocated substantial funding to ITIs to procure CNC machines. The Central Ministry of Labour has initiated a Skill Development Scheme and a training methodology to train the trainers, he said, adding that the Apprenticeship Training Board aims to train 10 million people by 2015. S. R. Mani, General Manager, Operations (Boiler Shops); and T. Anandhan, General Manager, Human Resource also felicitated the three artisans.
