COLOMBO: The Sri Lankan military on Saturday charged the LTTE with blasting Kalamadukulam tank bund in a desperate attempt to stall the multi-frontal military surge towards Visuamadu area and said it would have an adverse impact on civilians caught in the crossfire. The Defence Ministry said, “This is totally an inhuman act with least respect to the lives of innocent Tamil civilians entrapped in the area.” It said the Tiger cadre used high explosives and triggered the detonation flooding a section of the A-35 Pranthan-Mullathivu main road, Ramanatpuram, Dharmapuram and Visuamadu. The Ministry said the floods caused would worsen the “LTTE orchestrated humanitarian crisis” in Mullathivu. As per government estimates, there are an estimated one lakh people trapped in the war zone. The military said fierce fighting in general areas, Northeast of Kalmadu and Nethiliaru, South of the A-35 Paranthan-Pooneryn main road had left scores of LTTE cadre killed and many injured. In a report on its website, the LTTE alleged that 63 civilians were killed and 200 injured in indiscriminate shelling by the military at various places in Mullathivu district in three days from January 21.
