NEW DELHI: Abhijeet Gupta’s resilience and D. Harika’s consistency have somewhat compensated for K. Sasikiran’s below-par showing after eight rounds of the Corus chess tournament at Wijk aan Zee, in the Netherlands. With five rounds to go, World junior champion Abhijeet is placed joint third at 4.5 points with three others. Harika, the World junior girls’ champion, is half-a-point behind and shares the seventh spot with Russia’s Anish Giri. On Tuesday, after a day’s rest, Abhijeet will play with white pieces against Oleg Romanishin, the Ukrainian who is in the 13th spot with three points. Harika faces leader Tiger Hillarp Persson (6), the Swede who enjoys a one-point cushion. On the other hand, 10th seed Harika is playing solidly. She may not have created many chances to win but has not given away much. The fact that she is performing 33 points above her rating of 2473 should please the World junior girls’ champion. In Group ‘B’, K. Sasikiran (three points) is struggling to justify his billing as the top seed. His lone victory came against the current leader, Nigel Short (5.5). Three defeats and four draws have kept him tied at the 10th spot with three points.
