AIADMK members walk out of House

Special Correspondent

They condemn Veeraswami’s remark

“All money for Sri Lankan Tamils Relief Fund received by cheque”

The Deputy Speaker rejects AIADMK’s plea to expunge Minister’s remark

CHENNAI: The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members walked out of the Assembly on Tuesday after Deputy Speaker V. P. Duraisamy declined to expunge Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veeraswami’s remark on party general secretary Jayalalithaa.

It all began with AIADMK member S. S. Krishnamoorthy posing a question about the collections made by the government towards the Sri Lankan Tamils Relief Fund. When his party colleague V.P. Kalairajan supported him, Mr. Veeraswami said all the money was received by cheque and accounted for.

He asked the members not to speak irresponsibly like their leader, who had issued a statement outside the House. This prompted the AIADMK members to raise slogans, demanding that the remark be expunged.

While Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan explained that the House had the right to discuss the issue, Public Works and Law Minister Durai Murugan said Ms.Jayalalithaa, being the Leader of the Opposition, could come to the House and raise the issue. As the AIADMK’s plea was rejected, O. Paneerselvam, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, led the walkout.
