Trainees at SAI urge Government to give them scholarships

Madikeri: Minister for Women and Child Development P.M. Narendraswamy has promised to help develop the Children’s Park adjacent to the Raja Seat gardens here, according to a press release issued here on Tuesday.

Mr. Narendraswamy visited the park after taking part in the Republic Day celebrations here on Monday. He also went around the park in the ‘puttani railu’ (toy train).

Deputy Commissioner M.K. Baladevakrishna said the park can be developed into a major tourist spot if funds were provided to improve the existing facilities.

The Minister said that funds could be made over through the Bal Bhavan in Bangalore. He held discussions with the Superintendent of Police, Headquarters Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner Chikkathimmaiah, Assistant Commissioner Akram Pasha and Madikeri City Municipal Council Commissioner D.H. Raya, with regard to the park development plans.

SAI visit

Later, Mr. Narendraswamy visited the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Hostel located here and interacted with students who are being trained in hockey and athletics.

Women have done India proud in the international sports arena and they should be emulated by girl trainees at the hostel here, he said. Mr. Narendraswamy expressed hope that India would regain its lost glory in the game of hockey.

Students told the Minister that though they had won prizes in the state and national-level events, they were not being given scholarships. They requested the Minister to provide scholarships through the Women and Child Development Department.

Mr. Narendraswamy assured the students that he would discuss the matter with the Sports Minister and ask him to make provision to give them scholarships and if that is not possible, then he would take appropriate steps to provide it from his department.
