Elevated expressway to have toll plazas

A.Srivathsan

Two exit and two entry ramps along the 17.5-km stretch planned

CHENNAI: The feasibility report, submitted by Wilbur Smith Consultants to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for the proposed four-lane elevated expressway from Chennai Port to Maduravoyal on the National Highway 4, has suggested that a toll plaza be set up on the facility near Chetpet.

Another toll plaza would come up as per the suggestion near Maduravoyal.

The project will acquire about 10,000 sq.m of private land and is estimated to displace about 3,600 houses in the slum areas along the Cooum and about 650 houses in non-slum areas.

In order to facilitate fast and easy movement of traffic, the road is elevated and will have only two exit and two entry ramps along its 17.5-km stretch.

One entry ramp from Sivananda Salai is meant to allow traffic from south and north Chennai to access the elevated road. Another entry ramp on the College Road is meant for traffic from Anna Salai via Greams Road. The exit ramp near the Chennai port will allow vehicles to proceed to North and South Chennai while the exit on Spur Tank Road will allow vehicles to connect with Anna Salai via Casa Major Road.

The elevation at the road starting point is about 1 meter and 12 meters at the section near Koyambedu. The expressway will have a toll plaza and will be laid at the cost of Rs.1,655 crore. The foundation stone was laid by the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier this month.
