Garbage mounts up on streets at Ammapet

Official apathy: Garbage remains uncollected for nearly four days on Jyothi Talkies East Street at Ammapet in Salem –

SALEM: The Jyothi Talkies East Street at Ammapet in the city has been stinking for a week now.

The residents say that garbage mounts could be seen on this street and in many other areas at Ammapet since the Corporation rarely collects and dispose them off. “As a result, we are affected by infectious diseases often,” points out a resident here.

The street in 35th division is predominantly populated by weavers. The unhygienic condition has affected their children who often fall ill. The break out of gastroenteritis also has been a frequent occurrence from these localities.

“They never come regularly to clear the garbage. Sanitary inspectors rarely supervise the cleaning operations. The Health Department of Salem Corporation, it seems, never exists,” says another resident.

The four-day and five-day old garbage heaps attract stray dogs, which also cause serious problem to the people and particularly the children. Mosquito menace is on the rise and drainage channels remain chocked. The residents demand the Corporation health authorities to redress their woes immediately.
