10,000 farmers to benefit in the first year Panel to study reorganisation of Milma THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet on Wednesday cleared a pension scheme for farmers aged above 60 years. Briefing the media on the Cabinet decisions, Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said that Rs.300 a month would be given as pension to farmers under the Kisan Abhiman scheme. In the first year, the scheme would cover about 10,000 farmers who were not getting benefits from any other welfare schemes. Farming should have been their livelihood and they should have been farmers at least for 10 years. The scheme also had provision to provide Rs.25,000 for the marriage of their daughters. Chief Minister announced that the Cabinet had decided to set up an expert committee to submit recommendations on increasing the production of milk, egg and meat in the State and reorganising the State Cooperative Milk Marketing Corporation (Milma). Agriculture scientist R. Hali would chair the committee. Mr. Achuthanandan said that full interest cost of the EMS Housing Scheme, to be carried out by local-self governments, would be borne by the government. The loans for the scheme were to be availed from cooperatives and public sector banks. The pay scales of the employees of the State Warehousing Corporation would be revised in tune with the pay revision effected for government employees in 2006.
