THANJAVUR: Writings by authors who have Left leanings are getting widely recognised now, indicating the people’s acclamation of Left policies, said S. Balakrishnan, general secretary of the Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, here on Sunday.

Speaking at the release of Solla Marutha Kathai _ short stories in Tamil written by V. Jeevakumar, advocate and a CPI(M) member _ Balakrishnan said that the award-winning film Poo was based on a short story written by comrade Thamizh Selvan.

Jeevakumar had written short stories depicting problems faced by Thirunangais (Aravanis), problems due to migration, on historical characters like Poolithevan and Seetha of Ramayana. That the book was brought out by Tamil Nadu Murpokku Ezhuthalar-Kalaignargal Sangam was another credit as the writers promoted by the organisation were award winners, he said.

Senior advocate Thanai Ramamurthy said that Communist writers have done yeoman service to Tamil language. Tamil and its cultural pride should not be restricted to writers belonging to certain parties alone.

Tamil University Registrar Karthikeyan released the first copy. He said that Tamil University Vice-Chancellor Dr.M.Rajendran had asked him to convey the message that the book would be reviewed by scholars at a meeting to be organised soon at the university.

Dr. K.Ramasamy of Centre for Tamil Classical Language Research, received the first copy. Amuthan Adigal, State secretary of Thiruvarut Peravai, said that Jeevakumar had infused realism into his work.

Poet T. Dhanabal, district president of Sangam, presided over the meeting. Kalapiran, sangam district secretary, welcomed the gathering.
