Heroes remembered

The Department of Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology in Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia organised a day-long techno-social festival this past Friday.

The festival, called “TRIPSTER’09 -- Tripping the Barrier, Switching the Society”, began with a rally on the theme “Saluting the Heroes, A Small Tribute”. Several students and teachers of the Department took part in the r ally held to remember the nation’s heroes.

The rally was followed by a discussion on motivating the students to serve the society and a seminar on the Right to Information Act.

Information Commissioner (Central Information Commission) M. M. Ansari spoke on “Implications of the RTI and its Impact on Educational Development”.

Children with special needs from the Okhla Special Centre also presented a programme.

Later the students of the Department divided themselves into “ruling party” and “opposition party” to debate in a “mock Lok Sabha”. They discussed various topics like “Should there be a dress code for girls in college?” and “Should there be co-habitation in hostels?”

A talk on “Distribution Networks and Power System Operation” was delivered by BSES additional vice-president Sajjad Rizvi, while BYPL chief operating officer Gopal Saxena presided over the valedictory function.

The day ended with a play called “Kal College Band Rahega” directed by Ravi Taneja of the Collegiate Drama Group.

Jamia Millia Islamia has signed memorandums of understanding with three universities -- National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan; Ajou University, South Korea; and South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.

The MoUs will facilitate exchange of students and teachers from these universities and Jamia and organise international seminars, extra-curricular studies and extension services.

“The agreements will cover exchange of library materials and research publications. They will also include joint research activities, joint course development and substantive cooperation at all levels of academic exchange,” said a Jamia official.

No nation can aspire to greatness if a large section of its population is excluded from the benefits of national achievement and progress, said Union Minister of State for External Affairs E. Ahamed at a function at Aligarh Muslim University early this week.

Addressing a public meeting on the occasion of Republic Day, the Minister said: “The challenge before the Muslim community is to ensure that the fruits of development are shared in equal measure by all communities, particularly those excluded and deprived”.

He urged the University community to play a role in reiterating India’s commitment to its core national values of secularism, democracy and pluralism and stressed that active participation of Muslims is required to meet this challenge.

Mr. Ahamed said it was unfortunate that some people linked terrorism with the Muslim community.

“It is unjust and uncalled for. Islam is against any violence or killing of innocent persons. Therefore, terrorism is against the tenets of Islam and terrorist have no religion except the idea of killing innocents in the name of religion,” he added.

School of Audio Engineering through its partner Access Atlantech Edutainment India Limited has announced admissions for new degree courses through the lateral entry mode.

“A diploma certificate in animation, film or audio can get a student a bachelor’s degree graduation certification in 24 months affiliated to Dibrugarh University,” said a release.
