Collector reviews drinking water situation

Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: Collector Mukesh Kumar Meena reviewed the drinking water situation in villages with the Rural Water Supply officials in the wake of the fast-approaching summer. He asked them to fill all the tanks before the sources that fed them dried up. Also, the officers were asked to prepare the contingency plan to supply water to problematic villages. The officials said out of 5,236 borewells in Kurnool division, three per cent were not functioning. A plan was prepared to repair them before summer. Thirty eight villages were identified where private borewells had to be engaged to ensure water supply. Also, 19 villages had fluoride problem. Private lines were laid to Tangedancha, Atmakur and Nallakalva for supply of water for three months. The annual fairs at Tartur and Gorantla which fall in peak summer have come for review since water has to be ensured for a large population. The officials drew the attention of the Collector to the water problem at Kandikayalapalli, Pinnapuram, Bhupanapadu in Nandyal division. Officials said groundwater level had depleted in 42 villages due to digging of private borewells.
