Factory owners liable to penalty of Rs. 2.1 crore

NEW DELHI: Power distribution company BSES on Wednesday claimed to have unearthed power theft of nearly 420 kW from various parts of the Capital. The theft was detected in three mid-sized factories producing high-grade melamine crockery which were allegedly stealing 330 kW of electricity.

According to the provisions of the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, owners of these factories are liable to be cumulatively penalised Rs.2.1 crore.

“A BSES enforcement raid carried out in the early hours of the morning in Dwarka caught a mid-sized factory producing high-grade melamine crockery stealing 235 kW of electricity by way of direct theft. A penalty of Rs.1.5 crore is liable to be slapped on the accused.

“Though the factory was being run by one Kiran Arora, BSES has booked both the user of the factory and the three registered consumers, Narendra, Anand and Jagdish Kumar,” said a BSES spokesperson.

The teams raided two more melamine factories in the vicinity. By way of direct theft they too were cumulatively stealing 95 kW of electricity. They are liable to be penalised around Rs.30 lakh each.

The enforcement team also raided a mid-sized plastic factory at Peeragarhi in Nangloi and caught it stealing around 80 kW of electricity by way of meter tampering. A penalty of around Rs.30 lakh is liable to be levied against the accused.
