Plea to address rail users’ needs

Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE: An urgent meeting of the Malabar Rail Users Association has asked the authorities to initiate timely measures to address the needs of train passengers in the region.

The forum demanded that basic infrastructure be improved in keeping with the increase in the number of passengers. More trains, better amenities at railway stations and extra bogies were the need of the hour, Malabar Train Users Forum general secretary C.E. Chakunny said in a memorandum.

The memorandum, listing the difficulties of the rail users and suggestions for improvement, was submitted to Union Minister for Railways Lalu Prasad and Minister of State for Railways R. Velu, among others.

The forum appealed to the authorities to end the discriminatory attitude of the Railways towards Malabar.

It demanded that an additional passenger train be introduced between Kannur and Shoranur.

In the interim, steps should be taken to introduce additional coaches in the trains plying between the two destinations to cope with the rush of passengers. The association demanded speeding up of the line doubling work simultaneously.

The other demands include extension of the Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam Jana Shatabdi Express to Kozhikode and facility in Kozhikode to attach additional coaches to trains in an emergency.

The memorandum highlighted an incident on January 18 in which a train was held up for more than an hour at the railway station here.
