‘Reconstitute Medicine Board’

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan unit of the All India Unani Tibbi Congress on Thursday called upon the State Government to reconstitute the Board of Indian Medicine lying defunct in Rajasthan since 2006 and hold elections for members of the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) without delay.

The Tibbi Congress, representing hakims (physicians) specialising in Unani medicine and surgery, observed at a meeting here that the previous BJP regime did not show any interest in promoting this branch of Indian medicine.

Tibbi Congress president Syed Ahmed Khan said the new Government had sent across a positive signal by announcing its intention to establish a separate Directorate of Unani Medicine. “The reconstitution of the Board will also go a long way in protecting the Indian medicine systems used by many people.”

Technical adviser to the Council, V. Kumar, said the elections to the CCIM — governed by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry — could not be held because of the Board’s abolition by the previous Government.

The Tibbi Congress members pointed out that whenever the election process starts, some “disgruntled elements” approach the court and obtain stay orders. They felt that the Congress-led Government should take immediate steps to restore the prestige of Unani medicine.

Among others, former civil servant A.R. Khan, social activist Chaudhary Munawwar Khan and noted Hakims Raza Ali Khan, Mahmood Hassan Siddiqui and Wasee Chaudhary addressed the meeting.
