VIJAYAWADA: The opposition parties in the general body of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) – the CPI, the CPI (M) and the TDP – came down heavily on the ruling Congress on Thursday for its alleged remarks in favour of the Shriram Energy Systems. CPI (M) floor leader Ch. Babu Rao, CPI floor leader P. Gowtham Reddy, TDP corporator Gogula Ramana Rao and others jointly addressed a press conference and alleged that the ruling party went back on its assurance given in the general body meeting that the Shriram Energy Systems, which was running the waste-to-energy plant at Ajit Singh Nagar, would be closed immediately in view of the pollution it was causing. Mr. Babu Rao said Mayor M.V. Ratna Bindu and others visited the plant recently and the Mayor announced that two months time had been given to the company to put things in order. It was against the spirit of the general body and the assurance given to the people. CAG remarksMr. Babu Rao said that Congress leaders even parroted the company management’s version that the VMC land had not been mortgaged for taking loan from the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) and the Technical Development Board (TDB). It was pointed out by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) that the corporation had failed to take necessary action despite the fact the Shriram Energy Systems had taken loan by mortgaging the corporation’s land. Demanding immediate closure of the company, the leaders asserted that the people would take action if the VMC failed to respond.
