Forum formed to conduct research on temples, monuments in Pudukottai district

Pudukottai: An exclusive forum to take up historical research programmes on ancient temples and monuments in the district has been formed recently.

The forum, “Pudukottai Historical and Cultural Research Centre,” comprises as its office-bearers a group of epigraphists, research scholars and former and serving officials of the Government Museum, the second largest in the State.

The district accounts for a large number of ancient temples and presents a variety of opportunities for research projects.

Though a good part of ancient sculptures, inscriptions and idols at the noted temples and famous rock-cut cave shrines have been documented, there is a still a lot of inscriptions or idols to unravel at these sites.

“Further, there are a number of less known places which need intensive research,” says forum founder president J. Raja Mohamad. The centre would focus on a special study on the erstwhile Pudukottai dynasty rulers.

Speaking on the objectives of the centre, he said that it would encourage research programmes on wars, reforms and donations made by the ancient rulers.

Inaugurating the forum, Superintendent of Police P. Moorthy said that the Centre’s efforts would go a long way in bringing to light several interesting facts for the benefit of the posterity.

Head of Centre of History of Bharathidasan University N. Rajendran, in his key-note address, appealed to the office-bearers of the Centre to ensure proper protection of ancient monuments.

Efforts should be taken for collecting information about ancient documents, palm leaves and other historical records under the possession of individuals and institutions.

The following are the office-bearers of the centre: R. Xavier – honorary president; M. Muthu Srinvivasan, B. Ramaiah; R. Sampathkumar and S. Viswanathan – vice-presidents; Karu. Rajendran – secretary; C. Govindaraj - treasurer.
