Vijayawada
Modernisation and expansion works pending for long Uncertainty causing concern to people, he says VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Friday urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to take necessary steps to begin the works on the terminal building project of Vijayawada Airport without any delay. In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, president of the chamber M. Rajaiah said that the district administration should expedite the process of acquiring additional land of 506 acres, which was required for the expansion of the airport. Pointing out that the modernisation and expansion of the airport had been pending for a long time, Mr. Rajaiah said though the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Government of Andhra Pradesh in February 2007 had made it clear that the entire work should be completed by July 2008, the works were just halfway through now. “The work on the runway expansion, strengthening and construction of apron and taxiway have since been taken up a little, while the proposal relating to the terminal building is still pending,” he said, adding that the uncertainty was causing a great deal of unhappiness and concern among the public. He observed that the absence of a full-fledged international airport was severely affecting the developmental prospects of the region. Avoidable delay“We desire that the AAI expedites the process of formulating the plans and getting necessary approvals relating to Vijayawada airport. We are very much concerned at the delay in this regard and we also consider that this kind of approach is only unfortunate and probably could be avoided,” he said. Mr. Rajaiah felt that there could be no hurdles for going ahead with the new terminal buildings, as the land required for the construction was available with the airport.
