BIS raid on drinking water unit

CHENNAI: A team of officials from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted a raid in Kavangarai, Puzhal, on Thursday to check the misuse of ISI mark on packaged drinking water.

According to a release, substantial quantities of spuriously ISI marked packaged drinking water in 20-litre pet jars and 300 ml bottles were seized from a unit, Aqua Femina Packaged Drinking Water on Valluvar Street, Kavangarai.

The water was packaged under brand names ‘Aqua Mona,’ ‘Cool Sip,’ ‘Aqua Fast,’ ‘Rite Aqua’ and ‘Aqua Femina,’ without licence.

The southern regional office of BIS has initiated action against the offender under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986.

The offence is punishable with imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of up to Rs.50,000 or both. People must exercise caution while purchasing packaged drinking water from the market, a release said.

Those who come across instances of misuse of ISI mark may inform the office located on CIT campus, 4th Cross Road, Taramani, or by e-mail at sro@bis.org.in or fax complaints to 22541087.
