“Centre doesn’t consult States on arms supply”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Centre never takes into confidence State governments or Cabinet Ministers before supplying arms to foreign countries, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Friday.

“It is sad that a person, who was Chief Minister of the State for 10 years, is not aware of the fact,” he said reacting to AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa, who wanted to know why the DMK and its Union Ministers did not object to supply of arms to Sri Lanka. He also recalled the clarifications made by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Defence Minister A.K. Antony that no arms were supplied to Sri Lanka.

“Arms were supplied when Ms. Jayalalithaa was the Chief Minister. But, I will not ask Ms. Jayalalithaa what she was doing then, because I know that States are not consulted on these issues,” said Mr. Karunanidhi.

On Ms. Jayalalithaa’s another poser asking him to explain the DMK’s stand on the demands of separatists in Kashmir and other parts of the country, he said the party had full faith in the Indian Constitution and was committed to protecting the sovereignty, unity and integrity of the nation.
